It has been estimated that there are over 1,000 children living on the streets of Mwanza. They run away from their homes following the death of one or more of their parents, poverty or domestic violence. 25% have never attended school and 45% have dropped out.
Upendo Daima employs workers to make contact with the children and offers them a safe environment in its Back Home House while it gives them counselling and tries to address the problems which led to them running away from home. If it does not succeed then they are offered a place in its Malimbe Family Home where they can be looked after and educated whilst retaining contact with their home villages and families.
Kids Aid Tanzania has refurbished the dormitory blocks, kitchen and communal areas at the Malimbe Family Home, paid for new cupboards and installed solar panels at the Back Home House.
